@Laurelai I don't think it is so much lack of understanding, but more the format of most regex schemes are a nightmare to proof read without putting in extra work to say break it into chunks and work on each part separately and then combine.
@Laurelai I think there might be a small group of people at my uni who understand regex after the mandatory class about finite-state automata and stuff
